The toileting visual schedule is a portrait A4 with numbered steps in two columns. Every step has a symbol, a short line of text and a box to tick. In Áigi Plan the template is called Using the toilet.
When the template fits
Using the toilet has more steps than you might think, and it is easy for one to drop out, usually flushing or washing hands. The toileting visual schedule shows the whole order in eight steps. The template fits when using the toilet on your own is new, and when the steps are there but need a reminder, at home, at preschool and at school. With the pictures on the wall, the steps do not have to be held in mind in the same way. More on why pictures can help in what visual supports are.
Make the template your own
Remove steps you do not need, or split one step into two. You swap symbols for others from the library, or for a photo of your own toilet. Print on A4 or save as a PDF, and put it up at eye level by the toilet. Laminate it, so it can take water.
How to use it
- Go through the steps together and point to each picture.
- Step back a little at a time, until the steps are followed independently.
- Tick off with a whiteboard pen on a laminated sheet.
- Take the visual support down once the steps are routine, and put it back if something changes.
Tips
- Start with the steps that are hardest and leave the rest as support.
- The same visual schedule at home and at preschool or school keeps the steps the same in both places.
- Share the visual support by link with whoever helps in other places.
