The bath time visual schedule is a portrait A4 with one step per row. Every step has a symbol, a short line of text and a box to tick. In Áigi Plan the template is called Bath time.

When the template fits

A bath has many steps in a row, and it is easy to lose track in the middle, especially when washing hair. The bath time visual schedule shows the whole order from filling the bath to pyjamas, so you can see what is done and what is left. The template fits as part of the evening, and when bathing is being done more independently with an adult close by. Why pictures can make a routine easier to follow is in what visual supports are and how they work.

Make the template your own

Swap the bath for a shower, or remove the hair wash on days it is not needed. You swap symbols for others from the library or for photos of your own bathroom. Print on A4 or save as a PDF, and laminate it, so it can take water.

How to use it

  1. Go through the visual support before the water runs, so it is clear what comes next.
  2. Point to the next step instead of saying it.
  3. Let the person in the bath show which step is next.
  4. Remove a step once it is routine, and put it back if it is needed again.

Tips

  • Washing hair is often the hardest step. Write what happens, for example that the water is poured backwards.
  • Put the visual support up where it can be seen from the bath.
  • Tick off with a whiteboard pen on the laminated sheet.
