Áigi or Widgit

Widgit has one of the world’s largest symbol collections, and many schools already have it. Áigi has a library in one style, an AI that builds the visual support and changes in a few clicks, in the browser. Here is the difference.

In short

If your school has Widgit today, and the child recognises the symbols, that is a reason to stay. If you want to make new visual supports in minutes, with the child’s own things as symbols, and show the same visual support on paper and screen, Áigi is built for that.

What is Widgit?

Widgit Software is an English company that makes the Widgit Symbols and tools for making material with them. According to Widgit’s website, both Widgit Online, which runs in the browser, and the InPrint 4 software give access to over 100,000 symbols and hundreds of editable templates. In Widgit Online you can also upload your own images and make personal symbols.

In Sweden and Finland, Widgit’s products are sold by Symbolbruket (formerly Hargdata), which according to its website has worked with Widgit since 1999. It also offers the Widgit Go app and the SymWriter writing program.

How you make visual supports in Áigi

You start with AI or a template. Describe, for example, a morning routine in six steps, and the AI builds a paper from the library’s symbols. Or pick a template and use it as it is, or let the AI fill it in for your everyday life.

Then you edit: click a text and retype it, swap a symbol, drag a step to a new place, add times. With Change with AI you ask for another step, times or a different theme, and with Create matching you make the next paper in the same style. You print the paper, put it on the child’s screen or send it as a link to the other adults.

Where Áigi wins

  • Create with AI. Describe what you need, and Áigi builds a proposal from the library’s symbols, which you edit until it fits.
  • Your photos become symbols. With Photo to symbol, a photo of the child’s backpack or your bathroom becomes a symbol in the same style as the rest of the library.
  • The main character can look like the child. Many symbols in Áigi are drawn with nine main characters, and you choose who the child in the picture is.
  • A style for today. Flat colours, a warm brown outline, no text in the picture.
  • Paper and screen in one. The same visual support prints on A4 and shows on the child’s tablet or the classroom computer, through a link that stays. You change what it shows from your phone.
  • Nothing to install, no course. Type a word in a card, and the symbol is placed.

Where Widgit still wins

  • Over 100,000 symbols and hundreds of templates, according to Widgit.
  • Many schools and municipalities already have it, and the child may have learned the symbols.
  • SymWriter for putting symbols to running text, and the Widgit Go app.

How to choose

If your school uses Widgit today, and the child recognises the symbols, keep them for what the child already knows. If you are making new visual supports, with AI, with the child’s own things as symbols and the same material on paper and screen, Áigi does that job better. Widgit has the symbols. Áigi has the symbols and the AI that builds the visual support.

Common questions about Widgit and Áigi

Is Áigi an alternative to Widgit?

For making new visual supports, yes. In Áigi you describe what you need and get a proposal built from the library’s symbols, which you edit, print or show on the child’s screen. If the child has already learned Widgit’s symbols, it can still be wise to keep them for what the child knows.

Can I use Widgit symbols in Áigi?

You can upload your own images and use them in the cards. Check first what your Widgit licence allows.

Can school and family use the same visual support?

Yes. Send a share link to the paper, and school and home work from the same visual support. With Screen you show it on the child’s tablet or the classroom computer.

Do we need to install anything?

No. Áigi Plan runs in the browser on a computer, tablet and phone. You create an account with email or Google and can try it for free.
